Outlander at Loch Ness and Urquhart Castle

the open moorland and admire the distant views – a truly evocative experience not to be missed. Culloden has scenic views over Inverness the true gateway to the Highlands. This gives you a chance to take a quick tour of the city, it was not used for filming Outlander but this is where it all started when Frank and Claire were on their second honeymoon. And when you are in Inverness you should visit  Urquhart Castle  an ancient fortress ruin on the shores of Loch Ness, truly an iconic Scottish site, for Outlander fans, it will be forever known as the place where Claire spots the ‘water horse’ in the Outlander series.

Outlander Sites connected to the Lovat Frasers

Other sites close to Inverness Beauly Priory These are beautiful ruins, where the Lovat Frasers are buried in the books and the site of Claire’s meeting with Maisri. Beaufort Castle Private Castle – the ancestral seat of the Frasers of Lovat. Enjoy a walk along the River Beauly and views of the historic Castle. Castle Leod A stunning castle believed to be the inspiration behind the fictional “Castle Leoch” home to the chief of the Mackenzie Clan in the series. The Castle is open to visitors and has some amazing stories for anyone interested in Highland history.

And last but not least at Newtonmore you have the Highland Folk Museum  This Open-Air Museum will give you a taste of Highland Life from the 1700s up to the 1960s. In fact, you may recognise many of the buildings from the filming of the series – just beware of the Redcoats! You may need longer here than you planned it is so absorbing.
